Create an Awesome Team!

I have often been asked, “How does a practice’s owner and manager get all of its employees on the same page?”

I like this question because regardless of the medicine and service provided by a team, if there is a lack of team cohesiveness and continuity, at some point these two areas will be compromised. It’s important to be on the same page during the slow times as well as the busy times. It’s important to be on the same page when you are adequately staffed as well as well as when the practice is understaffed. A true team can endure the good, the bad and even the ugly.

When I look at practices with whom I have and am currently consulting with, I would say the most successful teams are those that understand the owner’s philosophy and vision. Not only do they understand it – they are fully committed to the point that they are enhancing the practice daily. Here are the top three reasons these practices appear to be on the same page:

  • Engaging monthly team meetings are conducted consistently.
  • The practice’s mission statement is adopted by each team member and it drives their day to day actions and operations.
  • Management hires cream of the crop support staff.

I honestly believe that when these three approaches come together; a successful team is created. When a practice establishes a solid foundation through their mission statement, makes a concerted effort to reiterate this message in monthly team meetings, and hires employees who will enhance the practice’s mission and philosophy – getting everyone on the same page becomes almost effortless. If you are not conducting team meetings on a consistent basis, start this month. Kids are heading back to school to start a new year of school. This can be a great time of the year to start implementing productive team meetings and I have some tips on doing just that. If you do not have a mission statement or you think yours needs refining, here are some tips on How to Create a Mission Statement. Finally, I am including some Tips to Attract Awesome Team Members.
