Mark 2008 So Much To Do!

There is so much going on; I am not sure where to start. We just finished a VMC School of Veterinary Practice Management, awesome class! It is great to be able to teach our managers of the future. The class is a weeklong training program designed to teach practical practice management. All instructors have hands on experience and really get to work individually with the students. Class size is small (no more than 20 students) so there is a lot of interaction with a six month follow up. If you are interested you can get more information on our web. The next school is scheduled for the first week of May 2011.

Our Personal Best XXI is right around the corner, the meeting is pretty much sold out. We were able to acquire a little more space, but the hotel is sold out! We are really excited; this is indeed going to be a gathering of the eagles! What better place to gather than the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island Florida. I hope to see you there!

Our telephone assessment service is going great, and we will be introducing two new products and services at OPB. First, we will be offering a new subscription service to our Tools Book. You will be able to get quarterly updates to your tools book. Just like the new requirements for job descriptions, where you need to state the essential tasks of the job, these will be included in the subscription updates. In fact, we will be updating the entire Tools book on a continuous basis. This service will come packaged with new Tools Book orders and will be available to those that have purchased the Tools Book within the past three years. Look for more information on this service - coming soon. We will also be rolling out a new compensation package for Veterinarians. This package will have detailed information on Associate compensation, ProSal and compensation for owners, specifically three and four tier compensation. The package will have a detailed description of the compensation methods, worksheets and two Excel spreadsheets to figure out and track ProSal and Three or Four Tier Compensation. Associate and Owner Compensation is the area in which we get asked the most questions, so this package should help anyone dealing with this area of practice management.

So, as I said, we have been very busy with lots of things on which to update you. I hope you find this newsletter to be of great use and value to you. I also hope I will see you in Florida! Have a great month.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act - What You Should Know
by Sheila Grosdidier, BS, RVT, PHR

The Fair Credit Reporting Act is intended to assure that all job applicants who receive adverse credit reports must be given information from the entity obtaining the information about the finding. This means that if you choose to complete a credit check on a job applicant, you will have to follow this procedure if there is something on the credit report that could influence your extension of employment. Washington, Hawaii, Oregon and Illinois forbid the use of credit reports as part of an employee selection process. New Jersey is considering tight restrictions. Some states are very specific in how these reports can be used in hiring decisions unless the need for the information is related to the employee's job duties such as handling money or having authority over spending large sums of money. Keep in mind - the credit worthiness must be substantially job-related.

How Useful is Your Chart of Accounts?
by Monica Dixon Perry, CVPM

Most professions have developed a standard chart of accounts which allow individuals within that profession to compare themselves on an "apples for apples" basis. The veterinary profession was one of the last professions that developed a standard chart of accounts, however one was indeed conceived some time ago. This chart of accounts is known as the AAHA Standard Chart of Accounts, and lists all income and expense categories that should be adhered to by veterinary practices. Not only does the Standard Chart of Accounts list both the income and expense categories, but it also gives detailed definitions as to what should be included in each category as well. In order for your practice to effectively compare itself with other veterinary facilities, it would be ideal to switch to the AAHA Standard Chart of Accounts if you are not already using it. Now is a great time to considering using the AAHA Chart of Accounts. You can visit the following link for information and take the appropriate steps to start 2011 off on the right foot. http://secure.aahanet.org

Please consult with your accountant before making the transition. They should be able to provide additional guidance and support. Once your hospital has accomplished this goal, it will then greatly facilitate your ability to compare yourselves with other veterinary facilities, and hopefully provide you with a more realistic picture as to where the practice stands in relation to industry averages.

Don't Be a Grudge Manager
by Mark Opperman, CVPM

So, how are you doing as a manager? Do you feel that you are managing your practice, or is your practice managing you? I work with many managers and some are very effective and others are having a hard time keeping their head above water. Read More...
