News from VMC, Inc.
|
|
I'm not sure if we are in a recession or not but, with the cost of gas
being what it is and having no idea what it will be, people are definitely
watching their pennies. Veterinary medicine has proved itself to be
recession proof in the past and hopefully it will be again.
Regardless, a pro-active manager is going to pay very close attention
to the practice's bottom line and make sure the practice maintains its
profitability.
The little things can have a significant effect on your practice's
profitability. When was the last time you checked your reminder system
effectiveness? How about internal controls, are we making sure we are
receiving income for all services rendered? Are you printing out the
fee exception report every night to see how many services are being
given away? Keep a close eye on your practice and the doctors' per client
transaction-a few dollars up or down can have a major impact on your
practice's bottom line. You can say, "It's the economy;" or you
can say, "Recession is an excuse that I refuse to accept.

Do You Have Your Sales & Use Tax in Order?
by Monica Dixon Perry, CVPM
That's a question that I ask owners and managers during our
Principles of Veterinary Practice Management seminar. Unfortunately,
the veterinary industry has fallen under the radar and we are seeing more
Sales and Use Tax audits in our industry. Therefore, I encourage you
to equip yourself with the appropriate knowledge and information so that if
you are ever audited you will have everything in order.
Some states do not have Sales and Use Tax, but most do. You want to make
sure you are paying Sales and Use Tax in a timely manner as well as on
appropriate goods and services. Most veterinary practices fall short in
the area of paying on equipment purchases. The auditors know this and this
is unfortunately where we are getting hit the hardest. However, there are
several other opportunities were penalties and fines can be imposed during
an audit if guidelines have not been followed. I assure you that ignorance
or lack of knowledge will not be acceptable excuses for not complying with
the law. Therefore, knowledge is power and I encourage all owners and
managers to gain as much knowledge as you can regarding this often
overlooked issue.
Here is some basic information regarding Sales and Use Tax:
1. Veterinarians generally provide nontaxable professional services.
However, they must generally pay sales or use tax on items used to render
those services. In addition, in most states, veterinarians must also
collect and report sales tax on sales of taxable goods and services.
2. Each state has its own rules and regulations (where applicable).
Find out what your state's regulations are by contacting your accountant.
They should be well versed in this area and able to easily gather information
relative to veterinary practices for you.
3. A safe rule to follow is that if you are the last consumer of a
particular good, you are often required to pay some type of tax on that
item unless it is tax-exempt. Find out when this applies and you will be
headed in the right direction.

Vetstreet
by Mark Opperman, CVPM
I am sure you have heard of VetStreet-they have been doing a great job
in advertising themselves in the journals and conferences. VetStreet bought
VetSuite, VetInsight and Pet Portals. They offer high end web sites, client
information, reminders, pet birthday cards and shop sites that can be placed
on your web site, and much more. If you already have a good web site,
you can "move" it to VetStreet and they can add some of these
features for you. If you don't have a good web site, it is about time you
do. In today's business environment I believe it is imperative that a
successful veterinary practice have an awesome web site. VetStreet is
very affordable and they are great to work with. Here is their contact information:
